Elden Ring on Switch 2 is not news. The fact that it will be in a lap on August 28 is.
The Tarnished Edition is a port, a victory lap, and a test of whether the Lands Between still work when the TV is a train window.
Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition arrives on Switch 2 on August 28. We have played this game on everything with a fan. The new information is social. A lot of people are about to take the Lands Between on a bus.
Handheld FromSoftware is a personality test. On a television, the game is a cathedral you visit. On a train, it becomes a book of deaths you can shut when your stop arrives. I think that will be good for it. Limgrave is more interesting when you are not trying to clear it like a chore list. A portable edition rewards wandering, which is the only way the game was ever kind.
The best version of a giant game is the one you can close and still hear.
Will it look like a $3,000 PC? No. Will it be the version a lot of us actually finish? Maybe. The ports that matter are the ones that change when you play, not the ones that win a screenshot contest. If Nintendo’s machine keeps a stable sense of weight in the sword, the rest is scenery.
This is a launch, not a review of a build I have not finished on the new hardware. The take is simpler: the most important open world of the decade is about to become a commute game. That is funnier and better than another 4K patch note.
