Empower Jace is the mechanic till after the September 8 Reality Fracture rules article.

Mechanics day is the format till. Wizards of the Coast published the Reality Fracture mechanics article on September 8, 2026, and the set still streets October 2 with Prerelease running September 25 through October 1. I am filing empower Jace, Heartwood tokens, and Preparation as the cardboard conversation, not as another Echoverse novelization. Story desks already sold the serialized arc. Today the rules text gets the aisle.

Empower Jace is the marquee keyword action. When a card tells you to empower Jace, you check for a Jace planeswalker token you control. If you have one, you put the specified loyalty counters on it. If you have more than one token, you choose which token gets the counters. If you have no Jace token, you create a blue Jace planeswalker token with zero loyalty, then put those counters on it. The token's loyalty abilities are minus one surveil one, and minus three draw a card. Nontoken Jaces do not count for the check. The tokens are not legendary, which matters for weird copy plans later.

That restriction is the adult part of the design. Empower looks for the token Jace, not every planeswalker named Jace sitting in your Commander binder. Preview coverage has been blunt that letting empower feed normal Jace cards broke things in testing. Breaks get patched in the keyword, not in your feelings.

Empower Jace is the mechanic till. October 2 is still the sealed street.

Heartwood tokens are the new predefined artifact token. Each Heartwood is a red and green artifact that taps for red or green mana. Early printings may show a colorless artifact frame while reminder text keeps them red and green, per the official article. Aerid Konstrari, a Founder Sphinx of Hexhaven in the preview lane, shows the double duty: Heartwoods ramp you and count as artifacts for payoffs. Ramp plus artifact count is how midrange decks start grinning in September previews.

Preparation returns from Secrets of Strixhaven energy. Preparation cards look like two part frames. The creature owns the card's characteristics everywhere. The prepare spell lives in the text box as a spell you do not cast from the card directly. When the permanent becomes prepared, including many that enter prepared, you create a copy of that prepare spell in exile. You may cast the copy. If the prepared permanent leaves, becomes unprepared, or you cast the copy, the exile copy goes away under the published rules. Casting the copy unprepares the creature. If someone steals your prepared creature, they steal the cast permission too. Hexhaven students are rude on purpose.

Echoverse framing still hangs over the product. Reality Fracture is the clash story where Jace's alternate reality roommate situation collides with the Multiverse. Alternate versions, echoed pairs, and "what if" characters are the set dressing. Set dressing sells booster art. Mechanics sell sleeved piles. I am here for the sleeved piles.

Sunday already treated the story arc as product in Reality Fracture story as the card product.

Heartwood is mana that also counts as an artifact argument.

Calendar stays boring and correct. Prerelease September 25 to October 1. MTG Arena date in the collecting materials points at September 29. Tabletop release October 2. Commander parties and Magic Presents waves follow in October. Boring calendars are how LGS owners survive. Exciting calendars are how Discord lies.

What I want from empower Jace Limited is a real planeswalker token economy without every seat spinning into solitaire. Surveil and draw on a token that grows when you empower again is a card advantage engine wearing a blue hoodie. Engines need removal. Removal will decide whether empower is a feature or a table sulk. Table sulks are data. Data arrives at Prerelease, not in my Monday feelings.

Heartwood Limited will ask whether red green decks want the token more for mana or for artifact synergies. Wanting both is allowed. Paying cards for both is the cost. Costs are how Limited stays a puzzle instead of a participation trophy.

Preparation Limited is about keeping the holder alive long enough to cash the exile copy. Tempo decks will hate that. Control decks will love that. Midrange decks will pretend they are both. Pretending is the American dream of Constructed.

Practical shopper note. Preorder sealed if your store allocation looks thin. Schedule Prerelease if you want the first honest games. Ignore fake spoiler accounts that invent empower numbers. Invented numbers are how bank accounts cry.

The mechanics are the till date that decides whether your October binder gets thicker or gets flipped. I will be watching the first Prerelease tables for whether Jace tokens feel like partners or roommates who eat all the loyalty.

One last Miles note. I like keyword actions that create a mascot on the battlefield. Empower Jace literally puts a little blue problem in play and asks if you can feed it. Feeding problems is Magic's love language. Love languages get expensive in October. Budget accordingly. Sleeve the Heartwoods. Respect the prepare exile zone. And for the love of the Multiverse, read whether your Jace is a token before you try to empower a legend and cry into the comprehensive rules.

Preview season lies in tone and tells the truth in reminder text. Reminder text said the quiet parts: tokens only for empower, Heartwoods are red and green even if a frame looks shy, Preparation copies die when the holder dies. Quiet parts are the format. Loud parts are the stream. Stream yesterday. Format till now. October is seventeen days of theory away from cardboard that can finally argue back.

Variant chase will scream about Echoverse treatments and echoed pairs while Limited players quietly ask how often empower shows up at common. Quiet questions win formats. Screaming wins clicks. File both. Trust the quiet ones when you build the first sealed pool.

Constructed theory will overfit empower Jace the second a mythic looks cute on stream. Overfitting is how Standard decks die in week three. Week three is when the format tells you whether Heartwood payoffs were real or preview perfume. Perfume is optional. Play the cards.

I will be at Prerelease with a boring plan: respect the exile zone, count Heartwoods as both mana and artifact math, and remove the first Jace token that starts drawing cards like it pays rent. Rent is loyalty. Loyalty is a resource. Resources are why empower is interesting instead of cute.
