Street Fighter took the giant screen. Clayface is being asked to live in regular rooms.

Paramount bills Street Fighter Filmed for IMAX on October 16. Clayface lost that language and opens October 23. Cosmic Book News' Quorum chart says interest still prefers the melt. Theory: the premium format is the SKU.

Today is Tuesday, September 1, 2026, and Cosmic Book News just handed the Theories desk a chart that smells like a shelf war. Will Harrigan's morning piece, Fans Want Clayface Over Street Fighter, The IMAX Movie That Took Its Screens, walks The Quorum's new eight-week tracking board across fifteen movies opening between now and late October. Clayface sits at 32 percent awareness and 43 percent interest ahead of its October 23 date. Street Fighter, Paramount and Legendary, Jason Momoa in the stack, opens October 16 billed Filmed for IMAX. On paper the giant screen belongs to the arcade movie. On the interest board, CBN says the October field is chasing the melting man. I am labeling this a theory before anyone prints it as prophecy. I have not seen either film. Tracking is not a ticket stub. The theory is still the cleanest industrial sentence in the room: the IMAX is the SKU now, and the comic-book horror movie is being asked to live in regular rooms.

Start with the dates, because dates are inventory. Paramount's September 4, 2025 press release announcing the three-year Legendary distribution deal is blunt. Legendary's first film in the partnership is Street Fighter, co-produced by Capcom, filmed for IMAX, theaters October 16, 2026. Wikipedia's Street Fighter 2026 page and Deadline's trailer coverage keep the same window. Kitao Sakurai directs. The call sheet CBN and Deadline keep repeating includes Noah Centineo, Andrew Koji, Callina Liang, Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes, 50 Cent, David Dastmalchian, and Jason Momoa as Blanka. Clayface, per clayfacemovie.com and Warner's materials CBN cited back in June, is theaters only in North America on October 23, internationally beginning October 21. Cosmic Book News' earlier June report, Clayface Quietly Loses IMAX Billing, documented Warner scrubbing the IMAX line from production materials that once promised theaters and IMAX. IMAX's own 2026 slate deck, per that same CBN reporting, lists Street Fighter with full billing and does not list Clayface at all.

The IMAX is the SKU now. The horror comic movie got the regular rooms.

That is not a vibe. That is a screen map. A title actually shot for the format, opening one week earlier, is exactly the kind of release that keeps premium screens locked through the next weekend's opening. CBN said that in June. CBN said it again this morning. Street Fighter does not need to beat Clayface philosophically to win the giant glass. It only needs to be the Filmed for IMAX object on the October 16 shelf while Clayface is the R-rated body-horror object on the October 23 shelf. The theory writes itself from the billing language. Premium format is no longer a nice bonus line under a logo. Premium format is the product differentiator the arcade movie bought and the melting man lost.

Now the numbers, quoted carefully, because inventing tracking is how Theories desks get fired. CBN's Quorum chart, published this morning, puts Clayface at 32 percent awareness and 43 percent interest. Only three movies on the whole fifteen-title board score higher interest, and all three open in September: Resident Evil at 51, Heart of the Beast at 48, By Any Means at 44. Narrow to October and Clayface's 43 ties Other Mommy for first among seven October releases. Street Fighter posts 39 percent awareness and 39 percent interest after what CBN calls the worst two-week move on the chart, awareness down 7, interest down 5. Street Fighter is still the better-known title, 39 to 32 on awareness. Interest flips it, 43 to 39 for Clayface. Last week's Greenlight cut, which CBN separates as a different question, had Clayface at 21 percent opening-weekend intent among people who already knew the film, nearly double an 11 percent comparison average. Different survey question. Same direction. The aware minority is loud. The broader interest score is already competitive.

I am not going to pretend a four-point awareness dip and a two-point interest slip for Clayface are victories. CBN prints the dips. CBN also prints the calendar math: real money usually arrives about six weeks out, with most of it in the final three, which for October 23 means mid-September. The ranking held anyway. Fourth in interest overall. Tied for first in October. Highest interest among Warner's three titles on the board, ahead of Practical Magic 2 at 41 and Digger at 39. That is the part of the chart that makes a Theories column possible without lying. Demand is not the same thing as screens. Screens are not the same thing as demand. October is currently a split SKU.

Put the split next to the budgets and the genres and the theory sharpens. Deadline's Comic-Con Watkins piece puts Clayface near a reported $40 million, R-rated, ick and gore, Flanagan story, Watkins directing after Speak No Evil made money as dinner-party horror. Street Fighter is the Capcom brand with wrestlers and a Minecraft alum in the producer and cast gravity well, sold as Filmed for IMAX, opening as Paramount's first Legendary handshake title. One movie is asking you to sit close and watch a face stop being a face. The other is asking you to sit in a cathedral of speakers and watch Hadoukens scale. I already argued the smarter comic-movie lane in clayface-is-the-smarter-comic-movie. Today's theory is the retail consequence of that lane. When the smarter comic movie loses IMAX language, the smarter comic movie becomes a regular-room product, and the arcade movie becomes the premium-format product, even if the interest board currently prefers the melt.

Awareness is an ad campaign. Interest is a confession. Screens are a lease.

Supergirl is the ghost at this table, and CBN invites it on purpose. Days before that June opening, the same survey family had Supergirl last in interest despite an awareness surge. It then finished as the lowest-grossing DC movie in history, per CBN's framing. Timing differs. Supergirl was days out with the campaign finished. Clayface is more than seven weeks out with the real push not started. Raw percentages between those two moments are not a clean comparison. Rank against the field is the cleaner sentence. Supergirl reached release at the bottom. Clayface enters its marketing window near the top. That is encouraging for Warner. It is not a promise. It is also not an IMAX screen.

What the theory refuses to do is as important as what it claims. I refuse to invent a Quorum number you cannot find in CBN's piece. I refuse to claim I have seen Street Fighter or Clayface. I refuse to turn Jason Momoa's Blanka into a guaranteed bomb or a guaranteed tentpole. I refuse to pretend Filmed for IMAX language automatically equals a good movie. I refuse to pretend losing IMAX billing automatically equals a small movie. Regular rooms still sold Speak No Evil tens of millions. Regular rooms can still sell an R-rated DCU horror if the aware audience stays loud. The theory is about product architecture, not destiny. Paramount bought the giant-screen SKU for October 16. Warner is selling October 23 as theaters, full stop, in the materials CBN tracked. Interest currently prefers the second date. Screens currently prefer the first.

So here is the Tuesday theory, labeled as theory, while Harrigan's chart is still warm. Street Fighter is the Filmed for IMAX arcade restock opening October 16 through Paramount and Legendary. Clayface is the R-rated body-horror DCU restock opening October 23 without that IMAX billing. The Quorum, as printed by Cosmic Book News this morning, gives Clayface 32 awareness and 43 interest, Street Fighter 39 and 39, with Clayface leading October interest despite trailing awareness. Last week's intent cut among the aware was also hot for Clayface. None of that puts either movie in my eyeballs. All of it supports one shelf sentence. The IMAX is the SKU now. The comic-book horror movie is being asked to live in regular rooms. If Clayface holds that 43 while Warner finally spends, the regular rooms might be enough. If Street Fighter's Filmed for IMAX lease converts awareness into butts in giant seats, the premium format will have done exactly what the press release bought it to do. Watch the screens. Watch the interest. Do not confuse them. October is not one aisle. October is two products arguing about which kind of room counts as winning.

I already filed the smarter-comic-movie argument when Clayface still had a September date. Today the tracking is doing different work. If you want the dinner-party version of what James Watkins is actually selling, I wrote that this morning in the Speak No Evil catalog note. This page is only the rooms. Street Fighter leased the giant ones. Clayface is being asked to live in the rest. That split is the theory, and I am printing it as a theory, not as a review of footage I have not seen.
