Fortify turns Star Wars Unlimited bases into attachment math

Homeworlds (Oct 9, 272 cards) adds Fortify, Beast tokens, and Weakness tokens. Fantasy Flight's biggest set yet is teaching you to armor the thing you used to ignore.

Fortify is the sentence that changes how Star Wars: Unlimited talks about bases. Reminder text, plain: attach this to your base, not a unit. Homeworlds streets October 9 with 272 cards, Fantasy Flight's biggest set yet if you count Spark of Rebellion as set one and keep counting through Endor. Planets, ecosystems, alien creatures, and a new habit: armor the thing you used to treat like furniture.

Fortify is attach this to your base, not a unit. Furniture just got a keyword.

I care about that habit more than a preview gallery flex. In Unlimited, your base is the loss condition. Leaders are the personality. Units are the noise. Bases were the quiet object everyone defended and almost nobody decorated. Fortify turns decoration into strategy. Strategy is how a ninth set earns a seat after heists and Endor already spent a lot of franchise oxygen.

ScreenRant's September 10 explainer is the peg I am using. Pre-release week before street. Pre-release kits with six boosters to brew. Two Spotlight starter decks: Chewbacca and Grand Moff Tarkin as leaders. Tarkin specifically plays with Fortify by ignoring aspect penalties on upgrades that Fortify, which means he can grab off-aspect Fortify cards without paying the usual tax for leaving Vigilance and Villainy. That is not a fake combo article. That is published leader identity.

Previewed Fortify behaviors so far are already a menu. Discount non-aspect cards. Exhaust enemy units after you play another Fortify upgrade. Debuff enemies. Stop units from readying. Menu is the right word. Menus become metas when people stop theorycrafting and start grinding locals. Locals are still a month away. Theorycraft is allowed to be loud until then. Loud is not the same as solved.

Beast tokens are the other headline toy. ScreenRant calls them the largest tokens in the game so far, locked at 3 power and 3 HP. Big tokens usually mean you cannot spam them for free. Steps matter. Steps are how Fantasy Flight keeps a 3/3 from becoming a participation trophy. Weakness tokens are the polar opposite of Experience: -1/-1 as a condition sticker. Simple. Mean. Exactly the kind of token that shows up in every sideboard conversation by November.

Homeworlds as a theme is planets first. Heavy emphasis on alien creatures and the armies that invade them. That is franchise comfort food with a mechanical twist. Comfort food is how Unlimited keeps casual tables after competitive seasons get spicy. Spicy seasons still need a reason for kitchen-table players to open packs. Armor on a base is a reason you can explain in one sentence at a shop night.

Armor on a base is a one-sentence reason to open packs at shop night.

Compare the other October card calendar without collapsing hobbies. Magic's Fracture date on October 2 is already eating September sealed oxygen in collectibles coverage like October 2 is still the Fracture till. Different game. Different cardboard. Same early-fall feeling where two big sets fight for wallet share. Wallet share is adult. Pretending you can preorder everything is how dining tables become shipping depots.

I already treated Unlimited's competitive calendar as a living object when Paris LCQ chatter hit the wire in Friday is the Paris LCQ. Homeworlds is the constructed rewrite that arrives after those photos stop mattering. Photos are September. Constructed rewrites are October. If you are grinding promos now, Fortify is the ghost in the room. Ghosts become decklists fast.

Tarkin deploying toward Death Star fantasy is the splashy leader story in the wider set chatter. I will not invent card text Fantasy Flight has not put in the public explainers I am reading. Splash is marketing. Fortify is the habit change. Habit changes are what make a set feel bigger than its card count. 272 is already big. Habits make it feel larger.

Selfish brewing advice for the next four weeks. Do not rebuild your entire collection around a keyword you have only seen in articles. Do rebuild your brain to stop treating bases as invisible. Invisible bases were a beginner comfort. Visible bases are a constructed tax. Taxes are how formats grow up.

Pre-release math is simple and still easy to mess up. Six packs. A deck you assemble under fluorescent lights. A night that teaches Fortify faster than any article. If your shop has kits, claim one with a human message instead of a midnight refresh war. Refresh wars are how communities invent enemies. Enemies are optional. Kits are not infinite.

Chewbacca Spotlight is the other door for players who want creature-forward Homeworlds without learning Tarkin's aspect gymnastics on night one. Two doors matter. Two doors keep a set from becoming a single leader meme. Memes sell clicks. Doors sell lasting nights.

What I will not do is invent a week-one meta where Fortify auto-wins every base race. Base races will still be about tempo, removal, and whether your Beast ever hits the board before Weakness sticks to everything you love. Love is temporary. Tokens are forever until someone cleans the table.

Set history in one breath, because new players keep asking where Homeworlds sits. Spark of Rebellion set the tone. Later sets wandered through scoundrels, Republic politics, starships, Force users, operatives, heists, and Endor. Homeworlds is planet ecology with teeth. Teeth are tokens and keywords. Keywords are how a living card game admits the early rules were missing a lever.

I like levers that change defense more than levers that only print a bigger attacker. Bigger attackers are easy. Defense identity is harder, and Unlimited has always been a race against the base. Racing against a base you can now decorate is a different sport. Different sports need different sideboards. Sideboards will get weird. Weird is healthy in month one.

Practical proxy warning while spoilers finish. Do not sleeve fifty blanks labeled Fortify and call it testing. Call it vibes. Vibes are fine on a kitchen table. Vibes are how you teach the concept. Vibes are not data. Data arrives when real cards hit pre-release and people stop misremembering reminder text.

If your local scene is still post-Paris photos and promo hunting, keep that energy in its lane. Promo hunting is a different sport from constructed forecasting. I already watched that lane eat oxygen in Paris promos are the LCQ rent. Homeworlds will not care about your photo wall. Homeworlds will care whether your base survives turn six.

Creature emphasis also changes how Limited might feel. When a set leans alien fauna and planet defense, sealed tables stop being pure Rebel vs Empire cosplay and start being ecology with lasers. Ecology with lasers is a fun sentence. Fun sentences are how you recruit a friend who bounced off earlier sets. Recruitment is the quiet win condition for a ninth set. Quiet wins keep shops alive after the preview cycle ends.

One more card-games sentence. Fortify turns Star Wars Unlimited bases into attachment math, and October 9 is when that math stops being a preview. Armor the quiet object. Watch Beast and Weakness rewrite board states. Keep your Fracture money and your Homeworlds money honest with each other. Honest wallets build better formats than panic preorders. Panic is a feeling. Formats are a habit. Habits win October.
