Disney Lorcana's Paris LCQ is a 1,024-player meat grinder

The last-chance qualifier at Disneyland Paris is a Friday object with a 9:00 start and a 110-euro ticket. Official championship copy: Core Constructed, sets 9 through 13 legal, 1,024 players split into two 512-person pods, single elimination, best of three. Top 8 from each pod, 16 humans total, punch into a 200-player Main Event that already saved 160 Challenge seats and 24 CCQ seats. That is the format till. Not a pep talk. Not a fake Amber list I drafted from Anaheim muscle memory.

1,024 players is a leak, not a coronation.

I already treated Paris as the European till date after Anaheim crowned a deck in Paris is the Lorcana format till. Today is the day that till takes money at the door. LCQ is the ugly beautiful part of a championship. Ugly because single-elim at 1,024 is a coin-flip factory with extra steps. Beautiful because someone who was not on the Challenge gravy train can still be in the room on Saturday. Gravy trains need a leak. LCQ is the leak.

Main Event furniture, because people mix the rooms. Saturday is nine rounds of Swiss, best of three, top 16 to Sunday. Sunday is single-elim best of five, and the top 8 get Season 2 Worlds. Newport Bay Club is the public hall. Hotel New York is the invite room. Mixing those on a stream overlay is how viewers think they are watching the same tournament they could have sleeved into at 9 a.m. They are not. They are watching two products stacked on one weekend.

Anaheim already moved the crown. I pointed at that ink in the crown went to the prey deck. Dillon LeDuc's Amber/Amethyst win is the last big public sentence. Paris does not owe that deck a repeat. Core Constructed with five legal sets is wide enough for a different poster. Wide enough is not a prediction. I like it because format desks should not pretend the only legitimate weekend is a grind. Spectating is how new players learn what Core Constructed looks like when it is nervous. Nervous cardboard is educational. Educational is a public good even when the lanyard is cheaper.

What I will not do is call a winner at 10 a.m. from a hotel coffee. What I will do is name the constraints. Five sets. Two pods. Sixteen tickets. A Main Event that is already mostly locked by people who qualified the long way. LCQ heroes are real and also rare. Rare is why we watch. Rare is why we should not write a novel about a deck before round three exists.

Practical notes for people actually in Chessy. Early check-in was Thursday 16:00 to 19:00. Friday doors 8:00. Bring the legal pool, not the infinity pile, unless you are here for the infinity side event. Identity line first, snacks second, pride third. Pride is the thing that makes you stay in a losing seat instead of walking to sealed. Walking to sealed is allowed. Walking to sealed is often the correct format decision.

Last card-game sentence. Paris is taking last-chance money today. Core Constructed still owns the till. If you sleeve, sleeve for the pod in front of you, not for a trophy from another continent. If you watch, watch for the leak in the gravy train. Leaks are how a championship stays a story instead of a coronation. I would like a story. Coronations are boring by lunch.

Set legality is the quiet till inside the loud hall. Nine through 13 means the early sets are memory, not tools. Memory is how veterans get smug. Tools are how a 512-pod actually ends. If you sleeved a pet deck from set 6 because it was cute at locals, Friday will educate you. Education is expensive at 110 euros. Cute is free at home.

I also want to name the 200-player Main Event math without turning it into a spreadsheet flex. 160 Challenge plus 24 CCQ plus 16 LCQ is a room that is mostly already decided. Mostly is the word. Sixteen is not nothing. Sixteen is a door with a bouncer who happens to be a single-elim bracket. Bouncers are honest. Swiss is the polite fiction. LCQ skipped polite.

Streaming will make the hall look closer than it is. Overlays collapse Newport Bay and Hotel New York into one cartoon castle. Cartoon castles are easy to watch. They are terrible at explaining why your friend with an LCQ badge is in a different building than the people with Worlds already in their eyes. Different buildings are the story. Watch for the building.

Deck registration will be the first fight that is not about ink. Bring the list you registered, not the list you rebuilt at 1 a.m. after a Discord screenshot. Screenshots are not a legal pool. Legal pools are boring and correct. Boring and correct is how you still have a tournament when the judge asks. Judges are the adult format. Adults still get nervous. Nervous is fine. Fraud is not.

I will be watching whether Amber/Amethyst clones flood the early LCQ photos. Floods are not proof. Floods are fashion. Fashion is how a trophy becomes a costume. Costumes lose to people who actually read the set 13 cards. Reading is still undefeated. Undefeated is a joke until it is not.
