Darkhold Destiny writes its own Marvel story for Magic
Magic: The Gathering | Marvel: Darkhold Destiny is the first Marvel set with an original story, launching April 9, 2027. Here are the four Commander decks, the mechanics that matter, and every date from the NYCC panel.
Magic: The Gathering's third Marvel set is the first one that is not just Marvel heroes dropped onto cards. Wizards of the Coast revealed Magic: The Gathering | Marvel: Darkhold Destiny at New York Comic Con on Friday night, and the hook is that Wizards and Marvel built an original story for it. Marvel's announcement says it is the first Universes Beyond set created with Marvel around an original story and setting, unfolding across nearly 30 dimensions and centered on Doctor Strange, Thor, Hela, and Dormammu.
That pitch matters more than it sounds. IGN's panel live blog reports that the first two Marvel sets were about getting everyone's favorite characters into the game, while this one started from the world and added characters that fit. Wizards also leaned into villains: Hela as the foil to Thor, the Dread Dormammu as the foil to Strange. Wizards' own page adds Magik, stepping into Magic through her stepping disks, and promises devils, sorcerers, and vampire-hunting vampires. IGN lists Moon Knight, Ghost Rider, and Blade too.
The first two Marvel sets asked which heroes fit on a card. This one asks what Marvel looks like if Magic designers got to build the plane.
The mechanics worth caring about
IGN's live blog had the card details, and three of them jumped out at me. Hela introduces a keyword called Vengeance, which IGN describes as an Adventure you cast from the graveyard. The centerpiece, The Darkhold, is a three mana legendary artifact that gathers sin counters and draws you a card for each one, which IGN calls an evil take on The One Ring. And the Arcane spell subtype is back; IGN notes it has barely existed since the original Kamigawa block in the 2000s. There is also a new card type called Dimension that Wizards is not explaining yet.
My take: Vengeance on a commander is the line that will get people talking. A legend that goes to the graveyard and still has a spell to cast from there is built for Commander tables, and Hela is exactly the character who should come back angrier. The Darkhold is the card I would watch for price spikes. Anything that gets compared to The One Ring on reveal night is going to be argued about for months.
The four Commander decks
IGN lists four preconstructed Commander decks, each with a surge foil Collector's Edition. Here they are with my early read on who each one is for. The names and colors are from the panel; the fit column is mine.
| Deck | Colors | Who it seems built for |
|---|---|---|
| Strange Academy | White, blue, black | Spell slingers who like a three color pile of instants and tricks |
| Gods of Asgard | Red, green, white | Players who want big creatures and a Thor fantasy |
| Midnight Sons | White and black | Monster hunters; the Blade and Ghost Rider corner of the set |
| Lords of Hel | Black and red | Villain players, and probably the home of the graveyard tricks |
Dates to put in your calendar
The panel stacked a lot of releases on top of each other, so here they are in order. One warning first: coverage disagrees on the main launch. Variety printed April 7 and IGN wrote April 8, but Wizards' own page and Marvel both say April 9, 2027. Trust the publisher.
- November 2, 2026, 9 a.m. PT: Secret Lair Countdown Kit: Marvel's History of Heroes, 30 cards from over 30 artists, $199.99, per Marvel. IGN says it comes in nonfoil with a random chance at traditional or surge foil.
- Avengers: Doomsday opening weekend: Variety reports that people who see the film in Infinity Vision at Regal Cinemas get an exclusive Doctor Doom card. IGN names the card Doctor Doom, King of Latveria, and says it is while supplies last.
- Later in 2026, exact date not announced: Secret Lair x Marvel: Doomsdrop, which Marvel lists among its 2026 collaborations, mostly Doctor Doom with guest appearances. IGN reports three Doom drops, cards not revealed.
- February 26, 2027: the tie-in comic's first chapter goes digital, per Marvel. Wizards says it is written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and introduces a brand new character.
- April 9, 2027: Darkhold Destiny launches, with the physical comic that same week. Preorders are open now at local game stores, per Wizards.
The product list, per IGN, includes booster packs, Collector Boosters, a Prerelease Pack, Draft Night, a regular bundle, an Arcanum bundle with its own unique promo, and two Scene Boxes with mechanically unique cards. That is a lot of places for a must-have card to hide, and it is the part of Universes Beyond that wears people out. We saw the same pattern when Wizards went back for more KPop Demon Hunters Secret Lairs, and the regular Magic calendar is not slowing down either, with Reality Fracture still fresh.
It is also a big week for Marvel on our TV desk, where the Marvel NYCC TV panel laid out years of Disney+ plans. Darkhold Destiny is the more interesting announcement for my table, though. For once Wizards is not just licensing a story. It is writing one, and asking Marvel to follow its lead into the comics. If the original story is good, this could be the Universes Beyond set that wins over the players who usually roll their eyes at Universes Beyond.
