Dave Bautista as Kratos is the first God of War casting that understands the game’s joke.

Amazon’s series now has its ghost. The job is not to look like the cover. It is to play a father who is also a weapon.

The report out today is that Dave Bautista has signed as Kratos for Amazon’s God of War. After months of rumored talks, the shape makes sense in the way a lot of fan-casting never does. Bautista has the mass, yes. More useful: he has spent a decade learning how to be still on camera, which is the actual 2018-and-after version of the character.

The old God of War was a roar. The Santa Monica games we are going to hold this show against are about a man who already did the roar and now has to walk a kid through snow without becoming a monument to his worst day. That is an acting problem, not a trapeze problem.

Kratos is not a scream. He is a man trying not to become one again.

Amazon will want scale. I want the cabin. I want the boat. I want a series that understands the axe is punctuation. If they turn this into another pantheon travelogue with a celebrity in paint, they will have made the game’s least interesting chapter on purpose.

For now, the casting is a relief. It is also a test of whether a streamer can let a large man play grief instead of a boss fight. I am more optimistic than I was yesterday, which is a dangerous place to be about a video-game show.
