Necromunda's roleplay game is cancelled, but the Venator minis are still coming

Games Workshop has cancelled the Necromunda Roleplay expansion and promised the preview miniatures anyway. What survives from the announced core set, the 2027 roadmap in order, and what to do if your group was waiting.

Necromunda's roleplaying game is not happening. Games Workshop confirmed it in Friday's New for Necromunda in 2027 post on Warhammer Community, tucked right after a promise of new miniatures, terrain, vehicles and expansions: "However, there won't be a Roleplay expansion." The stated reason is that GW wants to focus on "even more great minis for the core game."

If you were following along, this was not a total shock. Bell of Lost Souls pointed out that GW had quietly pulled mention of the RPG a few weeks after announcing it, and people had been wondering why. Now we know. The good news, such as it is: GW says every miniature shown in the Big Autumn Preview is still coming, and all of them will be usable in standard games of Necromunda.

I am disappointed. I am also not sure the RPG was ever the right shape for this game, and the 2027 roadmap GW dropped alongside the cancellation is a decent consolation if your group mostly plays campaigns.

What was announced, and what survives

The roleplaying game was revealed at the Big Autumn Preview in September. Tabletop Sentinel's write-up of the reveal is still the clearest record of what was in the box, since the original Warhammer Community preview is gone. Here is that list, matched against what Friday's post actually says:

Announced for the Roleplay core setStatus after the October 23 post
18 new plastic miniaturesStill coming, usable in standard Necromunda
224-page rulebook with percentile rulesCancelled with the expansion
Arbitrator's screen (the games master role)Cancelled with the expansion
Two complete adventuresCancelled with the expansion
Two double-sided playmats, dice, reference sheetsNot mentioned; assume gone with the box
Four ready-to-play Venators: Escher Assassin, Orlock Gunslinger, Squat Fixer, Goliath ChampionThe models fall under "all the minis," so they should arrive; their RPG character rules will not
Journal Apocrypha: Denizens of the Hive (48 pages, 51 profiles)Not mentioned in the post

That last row is the one I would want GW to clarify. A book of 51 enemies and allies is useful to a regular Necromunda campaign whether or not the RPG exists. Friday's post does not say a word about it, so do not count on it either way.

The models survive. The book that told you how to be one person in the underhive does not.

Why I think GW made this call

The RPG pitch was specific. Instead of running a gang, each player would be a single bounty hunter, a Venator, working jobs for an Arbitrator who runs the game. Tabletop Sentinel described it as roleplaying and investigation layered on top of Necromunda's skirmish combat, with familiar touches like Single and Double actions and injury rolls.

That is a cool idea, and also a very different game to support. Necromunda already has a campaign system that people love precisely because it tells stories through a whole gang: fighters level up, take lasting injuries and sometimes die for good. GW just relaunched the line with the Necromunda Skirmish Core Set on August 15, according to Tabletop Sentinel. Running a second, parallel rules system for single characters means a second set of books, balance passes and FAQs, all competing for the same small audience. I can see a product team looking at that and blinking.

The tell is in GW's own wording. "Even more great minis for the core game" is a company saying the plastic is the business. For a hobby where people buy kits to convert and paint, that is not a crazy position. It just stings when you had already planned a Venator one-shot for the holidays.

The 2027 roadmap, in order

Here is the year GW laid out, with the expansion names as Bell of Lost Souls lists them:

  • Spring, Back to the Ash Wastes: new rules expansions and, per GW, the biggest plastic vehicle kit Necromunda has had.
  • Return to Hive Secundus: a trip into the Underhells hunting archeotech, with new fighters for the Malstrain Genestealer Cults.
  • Underhive Brutes: back to Cinderak City, one of the flashpoints of the Aranthian Succession, with support for some of the original underhive crews and new hulking brutes.
  • Bounty Hunters, late 2027: new mercenaries and gunslingers, built around hunting down bounties.

Before any of that, GW says a House of Iron expansion is still due this year, with three new multipart plastic kits for Orlocks. Bell of Lost Souls lists them as Orlock Road Sergeants with Cyber-Mastiffs, Orlock Ogryn Minders, and Orlock Road Warriors.

Look at the last roadmap entry again. Mercenaries, gunslingers, people hunting bounties. That is the Venator fantasy, moved into the skirmish game where GW already knows how to sell it. I would bet some of the RPG's ideas end up there. I cannot prove that and GW has not said it, so treat it as my guess, not news.

If your group was waiting on the RPG

  • Keep the miniatures plan. GW has been explicit that the preview models are coming for standard games. If you wanted the Squat Fixer or the Escher Assassin on the table, you will still get them.
  • Run a small-crew campaign. Necromunda's existing campaign rules already track injuries and experience per fighter. A table that wanted personal stories can get a lot of that by playing tiny crews and caring about every name.
  • Watch for Denizens of the Hive. If that supplement gets folded into the core game, it is the single most RPG-flavored book likely to survive.
  • Do not expect a revival soon. The roadmap runs through the end of 2027 with no roleplay slot. Plan for that.

Warhammer is having a busy fall across every format. Age of Sigmar just got Khazalite Holds folding the Fyreslayers into a bigger duardin army, and on the video game side Boltgun 2 is putting a Battle Sister beside Malum Caedo. Necromunda losing its RPG is a smaller story than either of those. For the people who play it every week, though, it is the one that changes what next year looks like.
