Trigun Stampede's tabletop RPG starts with a free Press Play
Mana Project Studio and Don't Panic Games announced an official Trigun Stampede RPG for a Q1 2027 Kickstarter. The free quickstart is out now, and its engine is a smart fit.
Vash the Stampede is heading to the game table. Don't Panic Games and Mana Project Studio announced Trigun Stampede Roleplay, the officially licensed tabletop RPG based on Studio Orange's 2023 anime, during the Crunchyroll Showcase at Lucca Comics & Games on Saturday. According to the press release on Anime News Network, the full game launches on Kickstarter in the first quarter of 2027, in English, Italian and French at the same time.
The part I care about is that you do not have to wait for the campaign. A free English quickstart, called the Press Play, is already up on Mana Project Studio's store, with French and Italian versions coming soon. That changes how I would approach this announcement. Instead of judging a logo and a press release, you can read the actual rules and run a session before the Kickstarter page even opens.
What is in the free Press Play
The Press Play product page lists the contents, and it is a real starter rather than a teaser:
- The core rules of the Resistance System, reworked for No Man's Land.
- Escape from Juniper, a ready-to-play scenario for three to six players plus a GM, which the page says lasts up to two sessions.
- Five pre-generated characters, plus group and settlement sheets.
- A quick reference, Fallout tables and safety tools.
The PDF runs 69 pages. To play, Mana says you need a set of polyhedral dice from d4 to d20 and about five d10s. The page also says the game is "Sparked by the Resistance" and uses ideas from the Resistance Toolbox published by Rowan, Rook and Decard.
Why the Resistance System is a smart pick for Trigun
The press release says the engine is a specially adapted version of the system behind Spire: The City Must Fall and Heart: The City Beneath. If you have not played either, the short version is that characters in those games take stress, and when it catches up with them, Fallout hits: something breaks, someone gets hurt, a bond frays. Success often costs you something.
That is a great match for this show. Trigun has never been about a hero who wins clean. Vash is a gunslinger who refuses to kill, and the series keeps putting him in spots where violence would be the easy fix. The store copy leans right into that, describing a world "where violence offers easy answers, and compassion demands courage." A system with built-in Fallout tables gives a table a mechanical way to make the merciful choice hurt, which is exactly the tension the anime runs on. I would be much more worried if this had been bolted onto a crunchy tactical combat system.
The settlement sheet is the other detail that caught my eye. The press release says players will explore a previously unexplored side of the planet, discover new cities and settlements, protect innocent lives and free captive Plants. A sheet for the town you are protecting suggests the game wants you to care about a place, not just your character. That fits a setting where every town on No Man's Land is one bad day from drying up.
How it compares with Mana's other anime RPGs
Mana Project Studio has done this before. The press release credits it with fulfilled Kickstarters for Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell Arise, among others. What stands out to me is that Mana picks a different engine for each license. Here is how the three line up, using the studio's own store pages:
| Game | Source anime | Engine | Free quickstart | Where the full game stands |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cowboy Bebop Roleplaying Game | Cowboy Bebop | Original d6 system | Basic rules and a ready-to-play bounty hunt | Core Book on the US store at $54.90; 25th Anniversary edition at $109.90 |
| Ghost in the Shell Roleplaying Game | Ghost in the Shell: Arise | Customized Forged in the Dark | Streamlined rules, character creation and an intro mission of 2 to 3 hours | Kickstarter fulfilled, per the press release |
| Trigun Stampede Roleplay | Trigun Stampede | Resistance System, reworked | 69 pages: rules, a scenario of up to two sessions, five pregens, Fallout tables | Kickstarter in Q1 2027 |
Sources: Cowboy Bebop collection, Ghost in the Shell collection and the Trigun Press Play page.
Mana also has hands-on history with this exact engine. Its own game TAZ is a post-cyberpunk RPG built on the Resistance System, and the studio's store copy says it "hacked and readapted" the system in all its aspects for that setting. So the Trigun team is not learning Spire's rules from scratch. That is a good sign for a licensed game, where the risk is usually a famous name on top of a half-finished design.
What we still do not know
- Pricing and tiers. Nothing has been announced for the Kickstarter.
- Whether Vash and the main cast are playable. The release talks about players creating their own characters, and the Press Play ships with five pregens, but neither source says who they are.
- Physical extras. The Cowboy Bebop line got dice sets, a screen and playmats. Nobody has said whether Trigun will get the same treatment.
- A firm launch date. Q1 2027 is all we have. Mana says the Kickstarter pre-launch page is where updates will appear.
Who should grab the Press Play
If your group liked the narrative, consequence-heavy style of games like the Interview with the Vampire RPG, this is worth a free download. The same goes for anyone who has been looking for short horror and genre one-shots, like the 13 Omens Re-Animator zine or the upcoming Hellraiser tabletop RPG. Escape from Juniper is sized for one or two nights, which makes it easy to test before you commit money.
If you want tactical gunfights with grids and range bands, this is probably not your game. One more Trigun thread for anime fans: Tsuneo Imahori, who scored the original 1998 series, is scoring the new season of a very different show, as we noted in our look at Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2.
My read
Licensed RPGs usually ask you to trust the brand and wait. This one hands you 69 pages and a scenario on the same day it was announced, built on an engine that already knows how to make good choices expensive. That is the right way to pitch a Trigun game. I plan to run Escape from Juniper before the Kickstarter goes live, and I suspect the Fallout tables will tell me more than any campaign video could.
