Munchkin is getting a 5.5E roleplaying game, and the BackerKit campaign is stamped for October 13. Lynnvander Studios is building it with Steve Jackson Games. Two hardcovers are the public spine: Munchkin 5.5E Ye Olde Rulebook and a standalone adventure called The Deadliest Dungeon. John Kovalic is on the covers. That is enough carton to take seriously even if you think Munchkin peaked as a beer and backstabbing card night.

Plain language. The card game Steve Jackson launched in 2001 was a parody of power gaming tropes in Dungeons and Dragons. There was already a d20 Munchkin RPG line in the early 2000s. This new pass aims at the revised fifth edition ruleset people shorthand as 5.5E, with comedy subclasses, playable Mimics among four species, and a Cheeky Cheating system that treats rule bending as a feature. Feature is a polite word for the thing your friend does when they think you are not looking.

Feature is a polite word for the thing your friend does when they think you are not looking.

I already live on TTRPG appointment calendars in nine days out on Daggerheart wide and I keep Cosmere digital stamps honest in Scadrial opens digitally on Tuesday. Munchkin is a different flavor of appointment: crowdfunding as the door you kick down before a retail book exists. Crowdfunding doors are how a lot of comedy RPGs get printed without pretending Target already ordered a pallet.

Tommy Gofton, Lynnvander's lead designer, said in the public statement that the goal is to give you every humorous absurdity you have experienced at a table and a reason to replay, with mechanics that can port into other campaign settings rather than living only inside a Munchkin vacuum. Portability is the adult pitch. Adult pitches matter because joke games die when the joke cannot survive a third session. Third sessions are the real Kickstarter.

What I like on paper is the honesty about greed. Official language leans into loot races, questionable teamwork, and turning on friends when the treasure is too good. That is the card game's soul. Translating soul into a full RPG is where most parody projects become either too mean or too polite. Too mean empties the table. Too polite becomes generic fantasy with pun names. Pun names alone are not a system.

Cheeky Cheating as a named subsystem is either brilliant or a session zero landmine. Session zero is where you decide whether betrayal is consensual comedy or a friendship test. Friendship tests do not belong in a Tuesday night book without a conversation. Conversation is the expansion pack Munchkin never included in the card box because the beer handled it. Beer does not scale to a hardcover.

Beer does not scale to a hardcover.

October 13 is roughly a month out from this filing. A month is enough time for the pre-launch page to grow a waitlist and for the internet to argue about whether 5.5E needs another comedy skin. Comedy skins are a crowded aisle. Crowded aisles are fine when the IP already taught millions of people to yell about levels and curses. Munchkin taught that lesson in living rooms that never bought a Player's Handbook.

Accessories already teased around the campaign chatter include a Deck of Ridiculous Things, an Iron Meowden dice jail, and a promotional D2 silver coin for early backers. Dice jails are joke products that somehow become useful. Useful joke products are the correct Munchkin energy. Useful is how you justify a shipping line on a BackerKit invoice.

Compare without turning the week into a parody syllabus. QuestWatch showed a shooter IP learning dice on a stage. Munchkin is a card IP learning hit points on purpose. Learning hit points on purpose is a full circle gag if you remember that the cards were already making fun of people who cared too much about hit points. Full circle gags are either charming or exhausting. Charm is Kovalic's job on the cover. Exhaustion is the table's job to avoid.

Practical backer advice I actually follow. Pledge for the books you will open. Skip the pile of stretch goal plastic unless your group already has a dedicated shelf for joke items. Joke item shelves become landfill with branding. Branding is not a personality. The Oath of the Killjoy Paladin might be a personality. Killjoy Paladin is a subclass name that understands the assignment.

College of Nihilism Bard is the other name that made me snort in a professional way. Snorting professionally is my job. The job also includes saying that subclass names are marketing until you see the features list. Features lists are where parody either interacts with bounded accuracy or becomes a skit. Skits are funny once. Interaction is funny across a campaign.

Steve Jackson Games licensing Lynnvander is a production tell. Lynnvander has been living in the 5E adjacent comedy and conversion space. SJG owns the joke. Ownership plus conversion craft is how you avoid a fan wiki PDF with a fake ISBN. Fake ISBNs are how hearts get broken in crowdfunding season. Crowdfunding season is basically always.

I will not invent a Roll20 release date. Reporting so far focuses on physical books and merchandise, with virtual tabletop support unconfirmed. Unconfirmed is allowed. Unconfirmed is better than a fake store badge. If your table only plays online, wait for a VTT sentence before you emotionally preorder a dice jail.

What success looks like for this project is not a funding thermometer screenshot. Success is a table that uses Cheeky Cheating once, laughs, and still wants to schedule next week. Next week is the metric joke games usually fail. Failure modes are real. Real failure modes are why I am cautious even while I am entertained.

Historical footnote without becoming a museum tour. The early 2000s Munchkin d20 books existed. Existence is not the same as a living scene. Living scenes need reprints, discourse, and a reason to open the book after the meme week ends. Meme week will be loud around October 13. Loud is not living. Living is a third session where someone plays a Mimic and the table does not collapse into a rules lawyer trial.

Same day cross talk for the desk: if you are already watching Mercer teach Overwatch to a stage, you understand why companies want dice adjacent to their brands. Munchkin is the brand that was dice adjacent before it was respectable. Respectable is a weird word for a game about stabbing your friends for a magic item. Weird is the point.

Last TTRPG sentence. Munchkin 5.5E RPG has a BackerKit door on October 13, two hardcovers, Kovalic covers, and a promise that cheating is part of the rules conversation. Sign the waitlist if your table already speaks Munchkin as a dialect. Stay away if you wanted noble heroes. Noble heroes were never invited to this dungeon.

Same-day neighbors matter for pacing your wallet. Wildmagic Frontier is already asking for Kickstarter attention, and QuestWatch just spent a weekend teaching Overwatch to roll dice. You do not need to fund every joke adjacent to fifth edition in the same month. Pick the table that matches your actual Tuesday.

I want the Deadliest Dungeon adventure to be playable as a one-shot for people who only own the rulebook as a bit. One-shots are how comedy RPGs recruit. Campaigns are how they retain. Recruit without retain is a Kickstarter highlight reel. Retain without recruit is a Discord of six forever.

If Cheeky Cheating turns out to be a once-per-session token instead of a free-for-all, that restraint might save friendships. Restraint is not anti-Munchkin. Restraint is how a parody survives contact with people who still have to share a ride home.

Final funding hygiene. Screenshot the pledge tier list on October 12, sleep on it, then pledge on the 13th for the books you will open by spring. Spring is a fair horizon for crowdfunding paper. Horizons that stretch forever are how joke games become guilt objects.

I also want Lynnvander to publish a clear compatibility note about which 2024 core books you need on the table. Compatibility notes prevent the worst kind of BackerKit surprise: funding a parody that quietly assumes three hardcovers you do not own. Assumptions are how comedy nights become shopping trips.

If your group already uses Critical Role's newer system more than 5.5E, you can still steal Munchkin's attitude without buying the math. Attitude is free. Math is the pledge. Free attitude is how QuestWatch energy and Munchkin energy can share a brain without sharing an invoice.

One more joke that is also a warning. Built-in cheating only works if everyone agrees the bit is the bit. If one player thinks the bit is a license to ruin, the hardcover becomes evidence in a friendship trial. Friendship trials are not in the table of contents. Put them in session zero anyway.

I keep a soft prediction that the Deck of Ridiculous Things will outsell the adventure module among impulse backers. Impulse backers love accessories. Accessories do not teach a table how to schedule next week. Schedule next week first. Buy the shiny deck second if the first session did not end in a friendship trial.

If Steve Jackson Games posts a live play teaser before October 13, watch it for tone, not for rules completeness. Tone tells you whether Cheeky Cheating is a wink or a weapon. Winks keep tables. Weapons empty them. Empty tables do not leave five star BackerKit comments, and comments are how late pledgers decide.

Cursed items, custom traps, and official stat blocks for classic Munchkin monsters are the other public promises. Promises become page count. Page count becomes whether your bag can carry both hardcovers to a friend's apartment. Apartment logistics are the true endgame of comedy RPGs.
