Pikmin Day gives the series the yearly spotlight it has earned

Nintendo made November 1 an annual Pikmin holiday, launched the Hello! Pikmin shorts and set a free Switch 2 demo. Here is every date in one place, in Eastern time.

Happy Pikmin Day. That sentence did not exist until yesterday. In a short Direct on Saturday, Shigeru Miyamoto announced that November 1 will be Pikmin Day every year from now on, joining Nintendo's MAR10 Day and The Pokémon Company's Pokémon Day on the calendar. Nintendo Life's roundup of the broadcast carries his reasoning: the red, blue and yellow Pikmin debuted together on the GameCube in 2001, and if you picture those three as the number one, you get 11/1.

I love that explanation, and I love it more because it is so Miyamoto. It is not a release date or a sales milestone. It is a visual pun about three little plant people standing in a row. One of the first shots in the Direct is a blue, a yellow and a red Pikmin lined up on a blank stage like digits on a calendar page. That is the whole pitch in one frame, and it is a better reason to throw a party than most corporate holidays manage.

What Nintendo actually announced

No new mainline game was revealed. Insider Gaming clocks the Direct at under ten minutes, and it was really a launch pad for things already on the way, plus one new project. Here is the rundown, pulled from Nintendo's own store page and the coverage at Nintendo Life, Polygon and GoNintendo:

  • Pikmin Day itself: an annual celebration on November 1, starting this year.
  • Hello! Pikmin: a new series of animated shorts that Miyamoto is making with Nintendo Pictures. The first one, "Frog," aired during the Direct and shows a red Pikmin trying to grab a battered baseball from beside a toad that is not as asleep as it looks.
  • A free demo of Pikmin 4 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy, arriving November 2.
  • Pikmin 4 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy itself, which Nintendo's store page lists for November 12, 2026.
  • Pikmin Bloom on phones gets a Secret Caves feature this winter.
  • Pikmin icons for Switch and Switch 2 profiles, bought with My Nintendo Platinum Points.

The Pikmin Day calendar, in one place

The dates are scattered across several posts and a Treehouse listing, and Nintendo gives its times in Pacific. US clocks fell back early this morning, so Pacific is now three hours behind Eastern. I gathered everything with a date attached into one table and did the Eastern conversions myself.

Two small notes on that table. The icon elements refresh each week, per the Nintendo post Nintendo Life quotes, so if you are collecting, check back weekly rather than once. And the shorts land in the Nintendo Today! app and on other official Nintendo channels, according to GoNintendo, so you do not need a Switch to watch them.

Why the demo matters more than the Direct

If you only do one thing this week, grab the demo. Per Nintendo Life, it includes the opening area, Sun-speckled Terrace, plus two Dandori Academy stages, and your save carries over into the full game. Polygon describes the same split: the opening area and two Academy challenges.

That combination answers the only question I had about the Switch 2 Edition, which is whether Dandori Academy is a real mode or a menu of bonus levels. On the store page, Nintendo calls it "an extensive series of Dandori exam stages" and says 72 stages will be released over time, at a range of difficulties. Polygon adds that limited-time exams will arrive every Friday, Saturday and Sunday with leaderboards. That is a weekend habit, not a one-time unlock. Two stages in a free demo is a fair sample of whether you will want that habit.

The other Switch 2 additions are smaller but fun. Oatchi, the rescue pup, now responds to voice commands through the Switch 2 microphone, and Nintendo says Dandori Battles can be shared through GameShare locally or online via GameChat, even with a friend who does not own the game. Higher resolution in TV and handheld modes rounds it out. If you already own Pikmin 4 on the original Switch, Nintendo sells an upgrade pack, and the store page notes the full game is required to use it.

Hello! Pikmin is the real long game

The new shorts are the part I would watch closely. This is not the first Pikmin cartoon. Insider Gaming notes that Nintendo Pictures' short "Close to You" from October 2025 also featured Pikmin. A monthly series is a different commitment. One video a month, every month, on Nintendo's own app, is how you keep a character in front of people between games.

It also fits a pattern. Miyamoto has spent this fall being celebrated, as I wrote when he was named to Japan's Order of Culture, and Pikmin has always felt like his most personal series. Giving it a holiday is a 25th anniversary gift that keeps paying out. Compare that with how other long-running series mark birthdays. When Lara Croft hit 30, the answer was a remake of her first tomb. Pikmin got a recurring date and a cartoon instead. I think that is the smarter play for a series that sells on charm more than spectacle.

What I would do today

  • Watch "Frog." It is under a minute and it is the best possible pitch for the series.
  • Catch the Treehouse at noon Eastern if you are on the fence about the Switch 2 Edition.
  • Download the demo Monday and play the two Academy stages before you decide between the full Switch 2 Edition and the upgrade pack.
  • Spend your Platinum Points before November 28 if you want the icons. They leave at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.

Nintendo did not need a new game to make today feel like an event. A date, a joke about the number one and a toad with a baseball did the job.
