Pokémon Unite is ending, but its library is worth saving

Pokémon Unite shuts down on Switch and mobile on March 23, 2027. Gem sales already stopped, and a library feature arrives November 12. The full shutdown calendar and a checklist for what to do before March.

Pokémon Unite is shutting down. The Pokémon Company posted an end of service notice on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, and the date is firm: service for both the Nintendo Switch and mobile versions ends on Tuesday, March 23, 2027, at 00:00 UTC. After that, nobody logs in and nobody battles. The Verge noticed the timing, too: the cutoff lands just after the Aeos Crown 2027 Tokyo tournament wraps.

I have written a lot of obituaries for hardware. This one is different, because the game is not dying of neglect. It is being put down on a schedule, with a goodbye party and, more unusually, a little museum on the way out. That museum is the part you need to act on.

The money stops first

The first thing to go is the shop's front door. As of 05:00 UTC on October 27, Aeos gem sales are suspended, new UNITE Club memberships are no longer accepted, and automatic renewals for existing members are switched off. If you are a current member, the notice says you keep your benefits until your paid period runs out. Gems you already hold still work until the end of service, and then they are worth nothing.

At the same moment, the official event notice turned on a Grand Shop Sale with discounts of up to 80% off, running until service ends. It also promises to bring back items that were exclusive to past events and battle passes, some of which were never sold in the shop before. So the sale is real, but notice what it is selling against: a hard expiration date. Anything you buy now is a costume for a party that ends in March.

Spend your gems on things you want to look at later, not on things that only matter in a ranked match.

The library is the real story

On Thursday, November 12, 2026, an update adds a special event, a new Unite Coin Exchange, Unite Coin missions and log-in bonuses, and a feature The Pokémon Company calls the library. Coins come from logging in and from winning matches, including ranked, and they can be traded for old Unite licenses, Holowear, Trainer fashion and snapshot items.

The library is what survives. Per the event notice, it lets you visit the Practice Area and view your Pokémon licenses, Holowear and move effects, Trainer fashion, Unite snapshot options, and your Trainer achievements, Pokémon achievements and tournament records, even after the servers are gone. Battle items, held items and boost emblems are view only, and the notice recommends finishing your emblem merges and held item upgrades before the end.

Here is the catch, and it is a big one. The library only activates if you complete its first data download before March 23, 2027, at 00:00 UTC. Miss it and you never get it. Library data generally cannot move between devices, may not be recoverable if deleted, and gets no support after service ends.

That is a better exit than most live games get. When a digital storefront closes, the usual outcome is a blank screen. I wrote about a softer version of this when Atari closed the VCS store but left owners holding the keys. Unite's library is the same instinct, scaled down to a photo album you can still pose in. It is not the game. It is proof you played it.

The Unite shutdown calendar

The dates are spread across two official notices, so I pulled them into one table.

Date (UTC)What happensWhat it means for you
October 27, 2026, 05:00Aeos gem sales suspended; new UNITE Club memberships and auto renewals stop; Grand Shop Sale startsNo new real money in. Existing gems and memberships keep working for now.
November 12, 2026, 04:00Special event, Unite Coin Exchange, coin missions and log-in bonus, library feature addedStart of the free cosmetics run, and the first day you can trigger the library download.
December 5, 2026Aeos Crown 2027 Tokyo qualifier tournaments beginCompetitive players get one last circuit.
March 23, 2027, 00:00End of service on Switch and mobileNo log in, no battles. Unspent gems are gone. Only a completed library download remains.

My before March checklist

None of the notices put it this plainly, so here is the order I would do things in.

  1. Do not buy gems you were already planning to buy. You cannot anyway. Look at what you hold and plan to spend it down to zero.
  2. Use the Grand Shop Sale for keepsakes. Holowear and Trainer fashion show up in the library. A temporary edge in a match does not.
  3. Log in on November 12 or soon after on the device you will keep. Since library data generally does not transfer, the phone or Switch you trigger it on matters. Do not do it on the old tablet you are about to wipe.
  4. Grind coins with matches you would play anyway. The exchange is how you pick up licenses and outfits you missed the first time.
  5. Finish emblem merges and held item upgrades. They become view only. Make the version you will look at the good one.
  6. Take your screenshots while the game still talks back. The library has a photo mode style setup, but your friends list and live matches do not survive.

Why it stings anyway

The notice thanks players who have been there since the Switch version launched on July 21, 2021. That is a long run for a free to play Pokémon MOBA, and it never felt like a side project. It was the one Pokémon game where the competitive scene looked like an esport you could actually explain to a non player: five on five, score the goals, do not get greedy at the objective.

What bothers me is the second line of the notice. Once service ends, the game content guidelines for online platforms stop being maintained, and The Pokémon Company will no longer support use of Unite video and images. So the clips people made over five years lose their official cover at the same time the servers go dark. That is not a reason to panic. It is a reason to save your own footage now, while it is still the present tense.

The live service era keeps teaching the same lesson, whether it is an hourly cloud pass like the one I priced out in Xbox Cloud Gaming's new playtime packs or a MOBA with a sunset date: you are renting access, and the receipt says so in small print. Pokémon Unite at least gave its players a library card on the way out. Go pick it up before March.
