Squadron 42 puts Mark Hamill back in a Chris Roberts cockpit
Squadron 42 opened Steam wishlisting with a new trailer and a Q2 2027 target, and its cast quietly reunites two Wing Commander III stars. Here is every release promise so far and what the Steam page actually says.
Squadron 42 has a Steam page. After all these years, that sentence still looks strange to type. Cloud Imperium Games opened wishlisting for its single player Star Citizen campaign on Saturday, October 10, alongside a new trailer, and the official announcement keeps the target where it has sat since August: a release planned for Q2 2027. The cast list in that release is the part that made me put my coffee down, because two of the names on it were in a Chris Roberts space game before most of today's Steam users were born.
The setup is straightforward military science fiction. It is 2945, the United Empire of Earth is close to collapse, and you enlist as a rookie in the UEE Navy, stationed on a capital ship with a crew you live and fight beside. Cloud Imperium promises dogfights, ground operations, stealth, and quieter scenes with your shipmates, all built on its in house StarEngine. The Steam listing pitches it in one line I actually like: "You don't watch the rise of a hero. You become one."
Thirty two years after Heart of the Tiger, Mark Hamill and John Rhys-Davies are back in a Roberts cast. That is not a marketing coincidence. That is a lineage.
The Wing Commander III reunion hiding in the cast list
The press release lists Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Ben Mendelsohn, Henry Cavill, Andy Serkis, John Rhys-Davies, Jonathan Bailey, Mark Strong, Alix Wilton Regan, Damson Idris, Liam Cunningham, and Jane Perry. Read the first and seventh names again. In December 1994, Origin Systems shipped Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger, the game that sold full motion video space combat with the slogan "Don't watch the game, play the movie!" Hamill played Colonel Christopher Blair. Rhys-Davies played Paladin and voiced the Kilrathi prince Thrakhath. Malcolm McDowell was Admiral Tolwyn. That was Chris Roberts' series.
Squadron 42 is the same idea with three decades of technology bolted on. The Star Citizen project history describes it as a "spiritual successor to Wing Commander," developed by Foundry 42 under Chris Roberts' brother Erin, who worked on the Wing Commander series and led Privateer 2: The Darkening and Starlancer. So the family is the same, two of the actors are the same, and the tagline on Steam is nearly the 1994 box copy turned inside out.
| Wing Commander III (1994) | Squadron 42 (planned Q2 2027) | |
|---|---|---|
| Developer | Origin Systems | Cloud Imperium Games (Foundry 42) |
| Roberts credit | Chris Roberts' series | Chris Roberts' studio, Erin Roberts leading development |
| Story year | 2669 | 2945 |
| Where you live | The carrier TCS Victory | A UEE Navy capital ship |
| How actors appear | Live action full motion video cutscenes | Full performance capture inside cutscenes and gameplay |
| Mark Hamill | Colonel Christopher Blair | In the cast (role not named in the release) |
| John Rhys-Davies | Paladin, plus Thrakhath's voice | In the cast (role not named in the release) |
| Platforms | DOS and Mac first, then 3DO and PlayStation | PC via Steam listed so far |
One line in that old record made me a little sad in the way only dead hardware can. A Sega Saturn version of Wing Commander III was announced and advertised and never came out. Somewhere there is a Saturn owner who saw that ad back then and is still waiting. Squadron 42 fans know the feeling.
Every release target, in one place
Here is the part where I have to be honest about the dates, because the whole reason this Steam page matters is the history behind it. These are from the Star Citizen project record and this weekend's announcement.
| When it was said | What was promised | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 2012 Kickstarter | Release in 2014 | Delayed multiple times |
| Mid 2019 | A beta before the end of Q2 2020 | Slid to an estimated Q3 2020 on a roadmap later abandoned |
| December 2020 | No date, no public gameplay until the home stretch | Roberts' own call |
| CitizenCon 2024 | First gameplay shown, a 2026 release suggested | Did not hold |
| August 2026 | Window moved to Q2 2027 | Current target |
| October 10, 2026 | Steam wishlist opens, Q2 2027 repeated | No exact day yet |
Game & Guide adds the reason Roberts gave for the move off late 2026: launching near GTA 6, which it says is expected in November 2026, would make it harder to get attention. I believe that. I also believe that a studio that has avoided firm dates for over a decade does not open a Steam page for fun. Wishlists feed the Steam algorithm, and you build that pile months before launch. This is the first piece of storefront plumbing I have seen from this project that only makes sense if the game is actually coming out.
What the Steam page tells you right now
- Minimum PC spec is posted. A 64 bit system, a quad core Intel i7 from Sandy Bridge on or AMD Bulldozer on, and a DirectX 11.1 card with 8 GB of VRAM. That VRAM line is the one to check, since plenty of older cards with strong raw speed only carry 4 or 6 GB.
- Recommended specs are not posted yet. Game & Guide flags this too. Do not buy hardware off the minimum line alone.
- Content notes: strong language, intense violence, blood and gore.
- Two playable leads. Per Game & Guide, Ian Duncan performs the male protagonist and Alix Wilton Regan the female one. She is also a Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age: Inquisition voice veteran.
- No price and no platform beyond PC in anything I read.
For context on where the money came from: the project record says combined crowdfunding and early access sales for Star Citizen passed $1 billion as of May 2026. That number is the reason every Squadron 42 date gets laughed at online, and it is also the reason the cast list looks like a prestige film. Both things are true at once.
If you want a cockpit right now, Ace Combat 8 is already out, and it is the opposite philosophy: arcade flight, clear missions, done in an evening. And if a 2027 sci-fi reveal is more your speed, Naughty Dog is holding Intergalactic for 2027 too. Squadron 42 is the one I will believe last and want most. I spent a childhood winter flying Blair's missions on a beige PC. I would like to finish this story before I need reading glasses for the HUD.
